Beyoncé Knowles-Carter is turning 40 in September and ahead of her big milestone, she graced the cover of September’s Harper’s Bazaar and gave details about about her career accomplishments, future plans and the two wellness ingredients she discovered during quarantine with her husband JAY-Z and their three children.
Like us, the pop icon was left to her own devices and took that time to slow down, find inspiration close to home and lean into self-care rituals. The end result? A passion for buzzy ingredients like CBD and honey and a plan to build her own farm.
According to the star, CBD helps her with getting a good night’s rest and alleviating some of the pain she’s endured from the years of memorable, yet taxing performances. “I’ve personally struggled with insomnia from touring for more than half of my life,” she said. “Years of wear and tear on my muscles from dancing in heels. The stress on my hair and skin, from sprays and dyes to the heat of a curling iron and wearing heavy makeup while sweating on stage.”
“I discovered CBD on my last tour, and I’ve experienced its benefits for soreness and inflammation. It helped with my restless nights and the agitation that comes from not being able to fall asleep. I found healing properties in honey that benefit me and my children. And now I’m building a hemp and a honey farm. I’ve even got hives on my roof!” We can’t think of anything more fitting for the star whose legion of fans call themselves the “Beyhive,” then a collection of actual beehives on her roof.
In addition to the powerful restorative benefits of CBD and honey, Beyoncé points to a more relaxed attitude toward dieting and exercise. She famously employed a strict 22 Days Nutrition plan to get her ready for her 2019 Coachella headline, but now the star says she’s listening to her body and focusing on what it needs versus what she looks like.”In the past, I spent too much time on diets, with the misconception that self-care meant exercising and being overly conscious of my body. My health, the way I feel when I wake up in the morning, my peace of mind, the number of times I smile, what I’m feeding my mind and my body—those are the things that I’ve been focusing on.”
Part of the star’s new journey of self-acceptance involves eating the foods she used to avoid when she wants to and learning to relax the rules: “Mental health is self-care too. I’m learning to break the cycle of poor health and neglect, focusing my energy on my body and taking note of the subtle signs that it gives me. Your body tells you everything you need to know, but I’ve had to learn to listen. It’s a process to change habits and look past the bag of chips and the chaos everywhere!”
