A new poll shows 60% of Republicans support President Joe Biden‘s proposal to send Americans $1.400 coronavirus stimulus checks.
The survey, conducted between January 28 and February 1, included more than 1,000 adults. The $1,400 checks are part of Biden’s $1.9 trillion coronavirus relief package. Despite Republican support, many of the lawmakers in the party have deemed Biden’s package too costly.
A group of Republican lawmakers released a $618 billion package which includes $1,000 stimulus checks, but anyone making more than $50,000 would be ineligible for a payment. The GOP plan does not include money for cities and states and does not include the $15 minimum wage increase.
Biden believes that package is too small and congressional Democrats have begun the budget reconciliation process that will allow them to pass Biden’s bill without Republican support.
Three Democrats, Joe Manchin (D-WV), Mark Kelly (D-AZ) and Krysten Sinema (D-AZ), have yet to indicate whether they will support Biden’s; without it, the bill will die. Additionally, Manchin and Sinema refused to eliminate the filibuster in Congress
Progressive Democrats who believe Manchin and Sinema are standing in the way of progress with their conservative views are now trying to apply pressure to them. Progressives, including Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY), have started a new PAC against the conservative Democrats called “No Excuses.”
According to the poll, 78% of all respondents said they supported Biden’s relief bill. Along party lines, 90% percent of Democrats and 64% of Republicans supported Biden’s package.
The poll also showed widespread support for other Democratic initiatives: 65% of respondents supported a pathway to citizenship for immigrants. 63% of respondents support rejoining the Paris Climate Agreement and 61% support raising the federal minimum wage.
While the government continues to debate, Americans continue to suffer. Cases are slowly starting to trend downward as more than 20.7 million Americans have received at least one dose of a vaccine and more than 3 million Americans have been fully vaccinated, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
