I’ve struggled with bouts of severe, cystic acne on and off since I was 14 years old and, to my disappointment, have never found a permanent solution. I’ve tried everything from prescription topical washes and creams to oral antibiotics and medications like doxycycline and spironolactone, but nothing has really gotten my skin fully clear. Now, in my 20s, I decided to take the plunge and give Accutane a try. Even for those who haven’t struggled with problematic skin, many have heard of Accutane and know it from its severe side effects, specifically dry skin and lips.
Now approaching the halfway mark of my treatment, I’m well into dealing with the trials and tribulations of the intense medication, and my severely dry and chapped lips are visible proof. Throughout the past couple of months, I’ve experimented with tons of hydrating lip products to see which could give my lips the relief they so badly needed. These are the balms, glosses and treatments that really did the trick.
1 / 4
Summer Fridays Lip Butter Balm ($23)
In addition to the fact that it’s oh so delicious, this balm was one of the few lip products I tried that truly hit the nail on the head in terms of consistency. The formula is perfectly thick without being sticky or tacky and was hydrating enough that I didn’t find myself having to reapply every 5 minutes, which is essential.

Lanolips The Original 101 Ointment Multipurpose Superbalm ($16)
This stuff is truly a game-changer. When you first apply, it feels really thick, but once it warms up to your lips and settles in, I found it to be one of the longest-lasting lip products for keeping them hydrated. Another added benefit is that this is a multipurpose balm, so I found myself putting it on my skin in the areas I get the most dry—under the eyes, around the mouth—for some extra TLC on the go.
3 / 4
Dr. Sturm Lip Balm ($55)
For anyone who isn’t a fan of a thick lip balm, this is the one for you. I love how this formula manages to be super soft and thin but also uber hydrating. Since it’s not thick, I use this balm as a base when I’m wearing makeup—it’s the perfect way to hydrate and prime my lips before putting on any sort of lipstick which can be tough when struggling with Accutane lips.
4 / 4
Rhode Peptide Lip Treatment ($16)
I’ll admit, I was skeptical at first, but this product is truly worth the hype. The formula is totally hydrating but also gives your lips such a beautiful gloss that this has become my go-to for going out. Like I mentioned, it’s hard to wear lipstick with the dryness from Accutane since, in my experience, many lipsticks can be drying, but this treatment is the perfect way to soothe your lips while still giving them a night-out-ready look.
