Best Casino Games for Beginners

by Tonette Pringer

We know, no one enjoys standing out like a sore thumb when they try something new. Still, we will inevitably go through a few trials and errors in this situation—whether that’s related to trying out a new lip palette, signing up for a new bank account, or heading to the casino for the first time.

The latter might be one of the more intimidating learning curves. After all, the casino is a place associated with high-class fashion, intellectual fun, and exclusivity. Knowing the ins and outs of etiquette usually comes down to experience—and not many women have played their hands at a live or online casino when compared to the number of men who have.

If you’re barreling towards a casino night, then don’t worry. Learning the basics of the games and etiquette isn’t that complicated. After all, everyone heads to the casino for fun. Want to prep yourself for a killer night out? Start with the tips below.

ONLINE VS. IN-PERSON: THE BASICS

Even though casinos are some of the most luxurious places depicted in Hollywood, most casino players head to online platforms to play. The only difference between these two locations for a beginner comes in dressing up and being respectful of noise levels. And, when playing online, you’ll need to be more aware of game types.

For example, an online roulette platform likely offers multiple variations for players to choose from. Here, you need to decide whether you want to play American, European, High Roller, or regular roulette. When playing with a group virtually, make sure to select the game type that others are most familiar with. And don’t worry, we cover the basics of roulette below.

POKER: TEXAS HOLD’EM OVERVIEW

As highlighted by the roulette example above, top casino games usually have different game types. One of the most varied is poker, with dozens of offshoots to this popular game. Don’t worry though, sticking to Texas Hold’em is sufficient, as this is the type preferred by most players around the world.

To get the hang of Texas Hold’em, you’ll need to study up on the highest hand rankings. At the start of the game, the dealer hands two cards to each player, which they keep secret. These are ‘hole cards’. The dealer also unveils five community cards. A player attempts to put together the highest hand ranking from these seven cards.

As the game progresses, players can raise bets, fold their hands, or bluff to pretend they have a strong hand and bully others to fold. Players decide when the game ends, at which time those remaining present their cards. The winner takes all.

BLACKJACK: WHEN TO SPLIT & WHEN TO HIT

Blackjack is a lot simpler than poker. Rather than battling other players, the aim is to simply try and win against the house. In blackjack, a dealer deals to themselves and the players. The goal is to hit the number 21 without going over. Going over is a ‘bust’, which means the money bet goes to the house.

You’ll need to review card values in blackjack, as the ace can be a 1 or an 11 in value depending on the circumstances. You may also want to look over knowing when to ‘hit’ or ask for another card in hopes of hitting 21, and when to ‘split’, or divide high-value cards.

A round of blackjack ends when the player, the dealer, or both, hit 21. It will also end if a player busts, going over 21, or if a player gets closer to 21 than the dealer, in which case you just beat the house.

ROULETTE: STICK WITH THE EUROPEAN VARIATION

Roulette might seem like a spinning wheel and little else, but it’s actually one of the most complex casino games—and there are dozens of strategies that players use to try and win. We mentioned above that roulette also has a few different variations. Most players stick with European roulette.

That’s because European roulette has fewer numbers on its spinning wheel, which means there’s a higher likelihood that a player will hit their number. However, it’s not just about betting on numbers. Players can also bet on multiple numbers, a color, or odds/evens.
