12 designers present Khadi designs at London Fashion Week’s India Day

On February 17, the Indian High Commission in London, UK hosted a ‘Khadi Utsav Fashion’ runway show. A group of 12 female designers presented their designs to celebrate Indian handloom and design talent during London Fashion Week. 

The designers traveled to London, UK from various locations in India, brought over by their school the International Institute of Fashion Design, the institute announced on Facebook. The showcase also featured work by artisan weavers from across India. 
 
The first half of the runway show featured 40 modern-style garments which mixed traditional Indian aesthetics and craft techniques with the designers’ own eclectic inspirations, showing the diverse potential of Khadi, the Press Trust of India reported. The second half of the showcase featured 25 garments made from pure Khadi to highlight the textile and celebrate national pride. 

“The show brings together both sustainability and fashion, to showcase how fashion can be sustainable using the traditional craft of khadi-made fabric,” said Indian High Commissioner to the UK Vikram Doraiswami in his address at the event, Indian Express reported. “Khadi is not just the fabric of the story of India’s independence, it’s also the fabric of sustainability. It uses hand-made techniques, organic cotton, organic dyes and is a very special bond between the earth and human beings. It is creative, it is sustainable, it is green, and it is everything that we are looking for in a more sustainable planet.”
