It’s officially Plastic Free July. Of course, we should all work on reducing our environmental footprints all year long via green beauty buys. But some people need more motivation. So this month is the time to make less of an impact by vowing to buy zero-waste beauty products.
Switching to plastic-free beauty products doesn’t mean compromising efficacy. The vast majority of brands concerned about eco-friendly packaging also focus on what goes into their products. Namely, natural, certified organic ingredients that boast the highest green credentials. And you may not have to ditch your whole routine to go green. You may already be using a shampoo bar or bar soap that ticks all the boxes.
Pledge to go plastic-free this month by stocking up on these 10 eco-friendly beauty products. Then try to keep your zero-waste streak going into 2023.
We all know bottled vitamin C oxidizes quickly and starts losing strength after being exposed to light and air. This serum gives you all the benefits in biodegradable, vegan capsule form to maximize potency. The packaging is recyclable so you’ll be doing good for your skin and the planet.
Here’s a line of deodorants that’s kind to both your pits and the environment. It comes in several refreshing scents, like Coconut & Vanilla, Lavender & Rose and Cucumber & Mint. Each deodorant boasts packaging made from paperboard and even ships in a 100 percent recycled paper mailer.
No matter which bar we pick from Ethique, we know we’re helping reduce plastic consumption. Like this body wash in bar form. We love the Lime & Ginger version since it’s spicy with citrus notes making it perfect for summer.
Don’t be fooled by the look of this product because this “bottle” is all bubbles. Run it under the tap until you have tons of chamomile and lavender oil bubbles. Just make sure you set it somewhere dry and draining so you can use it again and again.
Refillable beauty products are brilliant for reducing our environmental impact. Kjaer Weis’ blushes are contained in minimalist refillable packages. The blushes are made with mostly certified organic ingredients and deliver a pop of color that’ll invigorate any lackluster complexion.

This may look like a plastic container, but it’s actually a sugarcane-derived bioplastic tube that’s recyclable. Inside the eco-friendly tube is a multipurpose beauty balm that can be used on your face, body and lips.
Pai Middlemist Seven Camellia & Rose Gentle Cream Cleanser + Dual Flyer Cloth, $59 at Pai

This vegan exfoliating soap is like a gentler version of a pumice stone. It has finely milled pumice to buff away flakes plus coconut, sunflower seed oil and camelina seed oil to keep limbs oh so soft. Seed Phytonutrients produces packaging made out of 100 percent post-consumer recycled paper. When plastic is used, it’s post-consumer recycled plastic that can be recycled again.
Beauty Kubes Shampoo for Normal to Dry Hair, $13 at Acala
This brand is plastic-free. Period. Beauty Kubes proves shampoo bars are handy and eco-friendly. Rather than one big slab, there are 27 cubes in the 100 percent biodegradable packaging. One cube equals one wash. Simply crumble, mix with water to form a paste, then apply the coconut milk and rose mixture to your scalp.
