After an examination, the reason for the death of Shonka Dukureh was determined. The actress and singer, 44, passed away naturally from “high blood pressure and atherosclerotic heart disease,” as stated in a statement from Tennessee’s Davidson County Medical Examiner’s office that PEOPLE acquired.
High blood pressure is the more widely used term for bp. The term “atherosclerosis” refers to the “hypertrophy or calcification of the arteries produced by a plaque buildup in the inner layer of an artery,” as defined by John Hopkins Medical.
According to a press statement from the Nashville Metropolitan Police Department on July 21, Dukureh, who recent times co-starred with Austin Butler in the newly published Elvis biopic as Big Mama Thornton, was discovered dead in the bedroom of the Kothe Way apartment she got to share with her two children.
That morning, one of Dukureh’s kids discovered her to be unconscious and hurried to a neighbor’s house. Based on the announcement, the neighbor dialed 911 at 9:27 a.m. local time. Following Dukureh’s death, there was no obvious suspicion of foul play.
“My deepest sympathies go out to Shonka Dukureh’s family. Shonka earned her degree from Fisk and lived in Nashville for many years, “Fox17 quoted Nashville Mayor John Cooper in a comment. “Her songs will carry on her talent and tremendous voice, and on this sorrowful day, we commemorate her legacy.”
Dukureh was a well-known gospel singer in the Nashville region, and her acting career was just getting started. She loved the arts, but teaching was her first love, according to Nashville-area news source WPLN.
When many of her classmates saw Dukureh in Elvis, she said to the publication in June; they reached out to her.
“I briefly attended second grade over at Buena Vista Elementary in Metro Schools, and then worked a great deal with inner city youngsters doing after-school programming, summer programming — those programs we need throughout the holidays so that children can have a friendly environment to be,” Dukureh said.
